What is a single point load cell?
Single point load cells are a type of weight transducer specifically designed to measure off-center loads on a single weighing platform, also known as beam type load cells. The defining characteristic of a single-point sensor is its ability to accommodate eccentric loads and provide accurate and consistent weight measurements regardless of where the object to be measured is placed on the platform. This makes them a crucial component in the world of weighing systems, playing an essential role in many industrial and commercia scales which can be built with a single cell instead of multiple sensors placed at each corner.
Single point load cells come in a variety of shapes and sizes and there is a cutout in the sensor elastomer, the aperture controls the thickness of the metal at various points across the load cell body, which defines the sensor capacity and is the key to the cell's ability to accommodate off-center loading.
Single point load cells are usually made from aluminum, alloy steel or stainless steel. The aluminum is well suited for low-capacity load cells used primarily for static weighing, the alloy steel is suitable for mid-range load cells with tight budget, while stainless steel is ideal for dynamic weighing and applications that require corrosion resistance or frequent washdowns.
In general, a single point load cell consists of four strain gauges, some micro beam load cells may take two or only one strain gauge with Wheatstone full bridge configuration. The sensor body needs to be polished to accommodate the strain gauges which need to be carefully bonded to the metal element. When the sensor is loaded, the shape of the load cell deforms slightly, the change is detected by the strain gauges which distort in unison with the body, resulting in a change of voltage. This voltage signal is proportional to the force or weight applied and can be further processed and displayed as a weight value.
